HC Deb 21 November 1939 vol 353 c1022
80. Mr. J. Griffiths

asked the Secretary for Mines whether he is aware that coal miners are experiencing difficulties and incurring risks in travelling to and from work on account of the black-out; and whether he will investigate this matter and consider what arrangements can be made to minimise these difficulties and risks?

Mr. Lloyd

If, as I understand, the hon. Member is referring to difficulties which are experienced on colliery premises, I would point out that arrangements have already been made by which certain defined standards of lighting may be used, subject to the authority of the local officer of police, and I hope that colliery managements will take full advantage of these arrangements. If any cases where there is difficulty in giving effect to them are brought to my notice, I will certainly have them investigated, but they could be dealt with more speedily if they were brought directly to the notice of the divisional inspector of mines.

Mr. E. J. Williams

Will it be possible to arrange that the miners themselves should carry their lamps so that they may have light when they go to and fro?

Mr. Lloyd

It is a very difficult question.

Sir Ernest Shepperson

Will the hon. Gentleman give the same concession to Members of this House?
