HC Deb 16 November 1939 vol 353 c796
13. Mr. R. C. Morrison

asked the Minister of Labour whether he is aware of the strong discontent amongst unemployed workers in districts where factories are working many hours of overtime; and will he publicly appeal to employers to discourage overtime in areas where there are large numbers of unemployed persons able and anxious to obtain work?

Mr. E. Brown

The view of the employers' organisations and of trade unions, with which I fully agree, is that it is undesirbale to work long hours of overtime in cases where it is practicable to get the extra work done by the engagement of unemployed workers. If the hon. Member will give me particulars of any cases he has in mind, I will make inquiries.
