HC Deb 16 November 1939 vol 353 cc827-8
62. Mr. E. Smith

asked the Minister of Health whether he is aware of the difficulties of local authorities in large industrial areas due to the growing burdens, the unfair incidence of local rating, and the effect of the Derating Act; that, in some cases, local rates are between 18s. and 25s. in the £;and what action he proposes to take to deal with this problem, or will he appoint a committee to consider the problem and report as soon as possible?

Mr. Elliot

I would refer the hon. Member to the reply given him by my right hon. Friend the Prime Minister on 4th May.

Mr. Smith

In view of the increasing difficulties in all parts of the country-would the Minister give his personal attention to the matter?

Mr. Elliot

The position is being reviewed by the associations of local authorities and any representation they may make will have my careful attention.

Mr. Batey

Will he give his attention to the Derating Act?

Sir Adam Maitland

Is my right hon. Friend aware that the association of local authorities has been pressing for the appointment of a committee to consider this question?

Mr. Elliot

The question is at present under review by the associations, and I must await their representations before taking further action.
