HC Deb 08 November 1939 vol 353 cc190-1
7. Mr. Lyons

asked the Prime Minister the respective salaries or emoluments received per annum, or to be received, by the chairman of the British Council and the other paid officers of the Council?

Mr. Butler

Since the answer is rather long, I will, with the hon. Member's permission, circulate it in the OFFICIAL REPORT.

Mr. Lyons

In view of the fact that the British Council have not met since 1936, when and by whom were these salaries fixed and these gentlemen appointed?

Mr. Butler

I should require notice of that; but I must refute any suggestion that the British Council have not met since 1936.

Mr. Lyons

Is it not a fact that the British Council have not met since 1936?

Mr. Butler

I do not know what the hon. and learned Gentleman means by "the British Council have not met," but I know that its activities have greatly increased and that it has done a great deal of valuable work.

Mr. Graham White

Does it not meet at least every month?

Mr. Butler

Yes, Sir.
