HC Deb 02 November 1939 vol 352 c2078
9. Mr. James Hall

asked the Minister of Labour whether he can give information as to the total number of persons on the unemployment register in Stepney in September, 1938, and September, 1939?

Mr. E. Brown

The numbers of unemployed persons on the registers of the Stepney Employment Exchange at 12th September, 1938, and nth September, 1939, were 8,921 and 15,724 respectively.

Mr. Hall

What percentage of that increase is due to the fact that supplies are held up?

Mr. Brown

Of course, that is a much wider question. The hon. Member knows that there has been a good deal of dislocation in the change-over from peace to war in all the areas, especially in the east, where the docks are.
