HC Deb 26 May 1939 vol 347 cc2675-6
1. Mr. Gallacher

asked the Secretary of State for War how many Public Relations Officers it is proposed to appoint to the Regular Army; how many have yet been appointed; and what are the duties of these officers to be?

The Financial Secretary to the War Office (Sir Victor Warrender)

The answer to the first part of the Question is "six." In one case only has the appointment not yet been definitely filled. The Public Relations Officers will represent the Director of Public Relations at the Headquarters of Commands, and, in general, it will be their duty, under the direction of (the General Officer Commanding-in-Chief, to keep in touch with local newspapers and to supply them with appropriate facilities and information, and to promote public interest in the Army by all suitable means.

Mr. Gallacher

Is there any reason why the particular Public Relations Officer referred to has not yet been definitely appointed?

Sir V. Warrender

No. Sir. I understand that this individual has to obtain a release from his present employment.

Mr. George Hall

Are these civilian appointments?

Sir V. Warrender

Yes, Sir. One of the persons is an ex-officer.
