HC Deb 26 May 1939 vol 347 c2691
Mr. Alexander

(by Private Notice) asked the Prime Minister whether he is in a position to make a further statement about the negotiations with Russia?

The Chancellor of the Exchequer (Sir John Simon)

No, Sir. I cannot at present add to the statement made by my right hon. Friend, the Prime Minister, on 24th May.

Mr. Alexander

May I ask whether the accounts given in the Press this morning of the negotiations up to date are substantially correct?

Sir J. Simon

I have not, I think, myself seen the statements to which the right hon. Gentleman refers, but he was good enough to warn me that he would put that question, and I have made inquiries from the Foreign Office. I am told that, although I cannot guarantee all the details of the Press statements, progress is in general being made along the lines described.
