HC Deb 25 May 1939 vol 347 c2490
65. Mr. R. C. Morrison

asked the Minister of Health whether he is aware of the difficulty experienced by air-raid precautions departments in recruiting women motor-drivers for training in black-out conditions, due to the fact that in many industrial districts there are very few women motor-drivers, and, to overcome this difficulty, will he authorise the training as car-drivers of women who are prepared to drive ambulances in time of emergency?

Mr. Elliot

Difficulties of the kind mentioned have been reported to me from a few areas. Where I am satisfied that it is not possible to recruit enough volunteers for the ambulance service who are already able to drive a car, I am prepared to approve suitable arrangements for providing the necessry tuition.
