64. Mr. Day

asked the Minister of Health the number of cases of smallpox notified among the civilian population in England and Wales as at the 12 months ended to the last convenient date; and the total number of deaths registered during the same period which were classified as smallpox?

Mr. Elliot

During the 12 months ended 31st December, 1938, 18 cases of smallpox among the civilian population of England and Wales were notified, and three deaths registered were classified as due to that disease.

Mr. Day

Do the figures include those notified by the port sanitary districts?

Mr. Elliot

They include all the cases notified among the civil population.

Viscountess Astor

Can the right hon. Gentleman say whether all the cases had been vaccinated before?

Mr. Elliot

No, Sir, not without notice.

Viscountess Astor

I would like to know.
