HC Deb 25 May 1939 vol 347 cc2494-5
54. Mr. David Adams

asked the Minister of Health whether he is aware that, during the first three months of the current financial year free milk was distributed at the rate of 175,242 pounds per annum at an estimated cost of £8,400 by Newcastle-upon-Tyne Corporation; and whether he is making inquiries as to the causes of the poverty indicated by this and other forms of public relief with a view to providing effective remedy for the same?

Mr. Elliot

I am aware of the facts stated in the first part of the question. As regards the second part of the question, the Government have continually under review questions of the improvement of the condition of the people and undertake measures to secure such improvement wherever possible.

Mr. Adams

Will the Minister kindly specify the measures which are being taken to deal with this poverty?

Mr. Elliot

I could hardly be expected to do that in answer to a question, but I may mention the Special Areas Act as one measure.

Mr. Adams

Does the Minister consider that the new taxes upon sugar and tobacco are aiding these people?
