HC Deb 22 May 1939 vol 347 c1904
32. Mr. Day

asked the Postmaster-General whether he can now give particulars of any decision arrived at for the purpose of extending the television service beyond the London area; and what difficulties have been experienced in the solution of these problems?

35. Mr. Fleming

asked the Postmaster-General whether he is now in a position to make a statement with reference to extending television facilities to licence-holders in the Manchester area?

38. Mr. Burke

asked the Postmaster-General whether he has now received the report of the Cadman Advisory Committee; and whether he proposes to take steps with a view to providing a television station for the North at Manchester?

The Postmaster-General (Major Tryon)

There are alternative methods of extending the television service beyond the London area, and their respective merits and costs are being actively investigated by the Television Advisory Committee. I have not yet received a report on the result of these investigations.

Mr. Day

Can the right hon. and gallant Gentleman say whether the difficulties have been caused either by technical difficulties or by financial problems?

Major Tryon

They are at present exploring the technical side of the question.
