HC Deb 22 May 1939 vol 347 cc1916-7
56. Mr. De la Bère

asked the Home Secretary whether his attention has been drawn to certain cases of foreigners landing in the United Kingdom without leave; and whether, in the case of certain former Hungarian nationals whose nationality has now been taken away and who cannot be deported as they have no nationality according to law, he will draw the attention of the immigration officials to this matter and urge on the officials increased vigilance to prevent a recurrence of these arrivals?

Mr. Peake

Yes, Sir; the attention of my right hon. Friend has been drawn to certain cases of this kind; with regard to the second part of the question, I would refer my hon. Friend to the answer given by my right hon. Friend to the hon. and gallant Member for Wellingborough (Wing-Commander James) on Thursday last.

Mr. De la Bère

Is my hon. Friend aware that the answer then given was in reference to seeing that the strings are more closely tied up? Is he further aware that the immigration officials are entitled to the fullest praise; they are overworked and understaffed, and will he not do something to help them?
