HC Deb 22 May 1939 vol 347 c1902
25. Mr. Parker

asked the Minister of Agriculture whether he is aware that Butley Creek sluice, Suffolk, is in urgent need of repair; that the surrounding farmers and landowners collected money for this purpose; that the catchment board stopped them from taking any action and what action he proposes to take in the matter?

Sir R. Dorman-Smith

I am informed that some two years ago an agent acting for two of the landowners whose estates abut on to Butley Creek approached the surveyor of the East Suffolk Rivers Catchment Board for permission to carry out repairs to two sluices. The surveyor raised no objection, but indicated that he considered the proposed works to be inadequate, and that he intended to include the repair of these sluices in a comprehensive scheme to be submitted for grant-aid under the Land Drainage Act, 1930. This scheme has since been approved by me for grant, and I understand that work will begin on the Butley Creek sluices during the current year.
