HC Deb 22 May 1939 vol 347 c1889
3. Mr. Errington

asked the Prime Minister whether, in view of the immediate and continuing need for British propaganda in foreign countries, he is prepared to cause to be written by an eminent writer an official book in simple language, setting out clearly and shortly the policy of this country, such book to be translated into all languages so that our ideals and our future aims may be made clear to foreigners?

The Under-Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs (Mr. Butler)

While I sympathise with the object which my hon. Friend has in view, I think that it is met to a considerable extent by the very wide publicity given abroad to statements of policy and reports of Debates in this House.

Mr. Errington

Does the right hon. Gentleman not realise that there is considerable ignorance of our long-term policy in certain countries?

Mr. Butler

Yes, Sir, I appreciate the anxiety of my hon. Friend. That is why I referred to the publicity given to reports of statements and debates in this House.

Mr. George Griffiths

When have the Government stated their policy in simple language?

Mr. Butler

Daily.
