HC Deb 22 May 1939 vol 347 cc1893-4
10. Mr. A. Henderson

asked the Prime Minister the composition of the committee which advises the British Broadcasting Corporation in relation to its foreign broadcasts; and whether His Majesty's Government are satisfied with its work?

Mr. Butler

No such committee exists. Although responsibility for what is broadcast rests with the B.B.C., the Corpora- tion keep the closest contact with the Foreign Office and with other Government Departments, in order to take full advantage of the information at their disposal. His Majesty's Government are satisfied with this arrangement.

Sir N. Stewart Sandeman

Do the Government have to agree as to who is to make these broadcasts, or are suggestions made to them?

Mr. Butler

I said that the responsibility for what is broadcast is with the B.B.C.; but they maintain contact with the Foreign Office and other Government Departments.

Mr. Henderson

Is it proposed to continue this arrangement?

Mr. Butler

Yes, Sir.
