HC Deb 08 May 1939 vol 347 cc15-6
28. Mr. De la Bère

asked the Minister of Agriculture whether, since big firms of exporters of wheat offals and cattle foods sell direct to Continental farmers' organisations, he will take steps to assist in ensuring similar supplies being available to farmers' organisations in this country?

The Minister of Agriculture (Colonel Sir Reginald Dorman-Smith)

I would remind my hon. Friend that the quantities of wheat offals exported to Continental countries from the United Kingdom during the past year or two have been insignificant and that, generally, shipments of cattle foods to such countries from the United Kingdom are relatively small. As regards sales of the kind indicated, I understand that direct sales of feeding stuffs to farmers' co-operative societies in this country constitute a normal feature of the trade.

Mr. De la Bère

Is my right hon. and gallant Friend aware of the advantages enjoyed by the fanners in the Scandinavian countries, and will he once again confer with his Department, as the amount involved is not negligible?
