HC Deb 08 May 1939 vol 347 c14
27. Mr. Hepworth

asked the Secretary to the Overseas Trade Department whether any of the export credits recently sanctioned by Parliament are likely to assist the manufacture of heavy textiles; and whether, in the course of any trade arrangements with countries where such manufactures are most useful, he will consider giving all possible assistance to the trade in question?

Mr. Cross

The Export Guarantees Act, 1939, extended the powers of the Export Credits Guarantee Department to give guarantees in connection with exports from the United Kingdom. These guarantees are available for the export of textiles in any case where the Department's Advisory Council are satisfied that the risk involved is reasonable. The answer to the second part of the question is in the affirmative.
