HC Deb 02 May 1939 vol 346 c1690
48. Mr. Boothby

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer whether, in view of the decision of the Government to introduce military conscription, he will consider the advisability of establishing a greater measure of control over private in vestment?

The Chancellor of the Exchequer (Sir John Simon)

The position will be kept under review in order to assure that the need for capital for national defence is met.

Mr. Boothby

Does not my right hon. Friend consider that under existing conditions it is desirable to exercise some sort of control over the direction, if not of the volume, of private investment?

Sir J. Simon

As my hon. Friend knows, there are a number of very large considerations involved here which we can hardly discuss by Question and Answer.
