HC Deb 02 May 1939 vol 346 cc1676-7
25. Mr. Boothby

asked the President of the Board of Trade whether any special measures have been taken or are under consideration with a view to increasing our export trade with those countries the political independence of which we have guaranteed?

Mr. Stanley

The guarantees recently given by His Majesty's Government to Poland, Rumania, and Greece were given for other than commercial reasons. The economic aspects of our relations with these countries are, however, under consideration with a view to our mutual advantage. As my hon. Friend knows, the Secretary of the Department of Overseas Trade recently visited Poland, where he discussed with the Ministers concerned a number of projects having in view the development of trade between the two countries. A trade mission is in Rumania at the present moment, and it is intended that Sir Frederick Leith-Ross should proceed to Greece, where he will discuss certain economic questions.

Mr. Boothby

Is it the intention to send a trade mission to Poland, as well as to Rumania and Greece?

Mr. Stanley

My right hon. Friend the Secretary of the Department of Overseas Trade, with various officials, was in Poland recently, and discussed a number of these matters there.
