HC Deb 02 May 1939 vol 346 cc1660-1
1. Mr. Kennedy

asked the Secretary of State for War whether Government approval has been given to the formation in the provinces of volunteer regiments composed exclusively of business and professional men; and whether that approval was asked for on the ground that it is difficult for employers to serve in the ranks subordinate to their employeés?

The Secretary of State for War (Mr. Hore Belisha)

No, Sir, and no representations of this nature have been received at the War Office.

Mr. Kennedy

I take it that the Minister is aware that this alleged difficulty is widely discussed in the Press, and may we take it that no such proposal will be supported by any branch of the Service?

Mr. Hore-Belisha

I was not aware of any such proposal. It would be quite contrary to our practice and we should discourage it.
