HC Deb 01 May 1939 vol 346 cc1500-1
48. Mr. W. Joseph Stewart

asked the Minister of Labour the numbers of men between the ages of 20 and 21 that are registering at the various Employment Exchanges in England and Wales?

The Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry of Labour (Mr. Lennox-Boyd)

I regret that statistics giving the information desired are not available.

Mr. Stewart

Do I understand that a register of the various ages is not kept at the exchanges?

Mr. Lennox-Boyd

We have the figures of unemployed men aged 18 and under 21 as at 13th March,1939. These total, including temporarily stopped, 52,330. We have no analysis of the ages separately.

Mr. Ede

Cannot the hon. Gentleman take a sample so as to arrive at something which will be approximately correct?

Mr. Lennox-Boyd

I do not think the result would justify the labour involved.
