HC Deb 01 May 1939 vol 346 cc1498-9
42. Mr. R. Morgan

asked the President of the Board of Trade whether he is aware that since 1932 the annual imports of condensed milk into this country have consistently been reduced, and in the past year amounted to only some 50 per cent. of what had been imported in 1932 as a result of the higher duty imposed and the more effective quota arrangements entered into with importing countries, whereas the imports of milk powder have not been reduced; and whether he will take steps to afford to this branch of the manufacturing dairy industry the saint help and assistance already afforded to the condensers?

The Parliamentary Secretary to the Board of Trade (Mr. Cross)

I am aware that owing mainly to increased shipments from the United States and certain Dominions, imports of milk powder have not been reduced to the same extent as condensed milk. With regard to the second part of the question, I would refer my hon. Friend to the reply given by the Minister of Agriculture and Fisheries to the hon. and gallant Member for Accrington (Major Procter) on 24th April.
