HC Deb 23 March 1939 vol 345 c1424
2. Mr. Mainwaring

asked the Minister of Labour whether, in view of the declared opinion of the Commissioner for Special Areas that this country will not be rich enough to afford the luxury of discarding towns and villages, his Department is engaged in discussing ways and means of creating alternative economic activity in the Special and derelict Areas?

Mr. E. Brown

The problems arising in the Special and certified Areas are continuously under the review of my Department.

Mr. Mainwaring

Is not the Minister aware that a very large number of small townships in this country are in the position of having been discarded over a number of years, and does he not think it is high time that plans were formulated to revive some economic activity in those areas?

Mr. Brown

I cannot discuss that large question in answer to a Supplementary Question.
