HC Deb 23 March 1939 vol 345 cc1431-2
15. Mr. Day

asked the Minister of Labour whether, in view of the forthcoming holiday season, he will give particulars of what steps are taken by Employment Exchanges who send girls to work in seaside resorts during the summer season to see that they are furnished with the names and addresses of social organisations in the towns to which they are sent, or women's sub-committee of the local Employment Exchange before they leave their homes for such employment in order that advice can be sought should necessity arise?

Mr. E. Brown

In all cases when girls under 18 are transferred through the machinery of the Employment Exchanges or juvenile employment bureaux they are advised by letter to apply to the local juvenile employment office in the new area, where they are furnished with the names and addresses of local social organisations.

Mr. Day

Has the Minister received many complaints from girls who have not been provided with even reasonable sleeping accommodation when they took these positions?

Mr. Brown

I cannot recall any, but I cannot give details of that kind in answer to a supplementary question. It the hon. Member knows of any cases I shall be glad to hear about them. We make the most elaborate arrangements where girls are transferred through the Exchange machinery.

Mr. Day

Are inquiries made as to the sleeping accommodation?

Mr. Brown

Certainly. The utmost care is taken.
