HC Deb 23 March 1939 vol 345 cc1456-7
71. Mr. R. Gibson

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland whether he is aware that new council houses in Tarbert, Argyllshire, are and have been standing four to five feet in water; what is the cause and what are the effects of this state of affairs; how it is proposed to remedy these conditions; and whether he has any further statement to make on the subject?

Mr. Wedderburn

I am informed by the county council that at an inspection on 18th March about three inches of water were found in the foundations of these houses, and that the flooding came from an old drain, whose existence was previously unknown. Remedial work, including the provision of a new drain and the enlargement of an existing ditch, is proceeding, and I shall let the hon. and learned Member know whether this is effective. The flooding has not affected the habitability of the houses.
