HC Deb 21 March 1939 vol 345 cc1109-10
31. Mr. R. C. Morrison

asked the President of the Board of Trade whether he is aware of the alarming increase of price-cutting in the grocery and allied trades; and whether he will consider setting up a committee of inquiry to obtain evidence and make recommendations for dealing with this?

Mr. Stanley

I have seen complaints that price-cutting is on the increase, but I do not think it is a question which could usefully be referred to a committee of inquiry.

Mr. Morrison

Is there not some method of getting the full facts in regard to this growing evil?

Mr. Stanley

If the hon. Gentleman can give me any facts, perhaps he will let me have them.

Mr. Benjamin Smith

Will the right hon. Gentleman see that everybody price-cuts so that the consumers can get things cheaper all round?
