HC Deb 16 March 1939 vol 345 cc580-1
36. Mr. Lipson

asked the Parliamentary Secretary to the Board of Education when the Departmental Committee that has been negotiating with the representatives of local authorities on the question of grant will present its report?

Mr. Lindsay

I regret that I have nothing to add to the answer which I gave the hon. Member on 24th November last.

Mr. Lipson

Is the hon. Gentleman aware that this committee was appointed over 18 months ago, and that the matter is of very great importance to local authorities? Can he say when he will be in a position to make a statement?

Mr. Lindsay

I made it clear the other day in the Debate that I thought that this was one of the most important matters affecting education to-day. The next step rests with the local education authorities.

Mr. Lipson

Does the hon. Gentleman suggest that it is the local authorities who are putting difficulties in the way?

Mr. Lindsay

I would not go so far as to say that; but the Board have put forward certain proposals and asked for certain replies, which are not yet forthcoming.
