HC Deb 16 March 1939 vol 345 cc573-4
25. Mr. Salt

asked the Minister of Labour whether he is aware that there is a growing tendency for employés who work for firms who adopt a five-day week to accept employment on Saturdays from multiple shops; and, as this practice destroys the value of the shorter working week while increasing unemployment, will he take steps, by Trade Board regulations or otherwise, to put an end to it?

Mr. E. Brown

I have no information concerning the practice to which my hon. Friend refers. In any case I have no powers which would enable me to regu- late it, even if it were practicable to do so.

Mr. Salt

Will the Minister bear in mind the fact that this is doing a great deal of harm in the Birmingham area?

Mr. Brown

I shall be very glad to have any information that the hon. Member can give me.

Mr. Macquisten

Will the Minister see that no lawyer takes work home at night?
