HC Deb 13 March 1939 vol 345 c41
76. Mr. Thorne

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department whether he can give any information in connection with a lift accident on the premises of Messrs. Lotery and Company, Limited, on 10th March last, where 10 people were injured; and what was the cause of the accident?

The Under-Secretary of State for the Home Department (Mr. Geoffrey Lloyd)

My right hon. Friend has received a preliminary report on this accident. It is understood that considerably more people than usual crowded into the lift, and that after slowly rising it rank at more or less normal speed to the bottom, where someone in the lift opened the gates and stepped out into the basement followed by the other passengers. One woman appears to have sprained her ankle. Some others were sent to hospital and treated for shock, but were all back at work later in the morning. Further inquiries are being made into the circumstances of the accident.
