HC Deb 09 March 1939 vol 344 cc2345-6
66. Sir Lindsay Everard

asked the Home Secretary whether, in view of the growing feeling in this country against the entry of an increased number of aliens, he will give an assurance that none of the Communist or Anarchist leaders from Spain will be allowed to enter and reside in this country?

Sir S. Hoare

Any applications from persons who may wish to take refuge in this country will have to be considered individually in the light of what is known about the applicant's character, conduct and circumstances. I appreciate the considerations which my hon. Friend has in mind, but he will recognise that a political label is not always in itself a reliable test.

Sir L. Everard

Is my right hon. Friend aware that during the Monarchy in Spain a good many Anarchist plots were attributed to those who lived in Barcelona, and will he ensure that people of that sort do not come to live in this country?
