HC Deb 07 March 1939 vol 344 cc1910-1
49. Sir Percy Harris

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer whether it is with his approval that old age pensioners, with an earned income of £125 per year, are being charged Income Tax on their income of £26 per year derived from the old age pension as unearned income?

Sir J. Simon

The hon. Baronet is, I think, misinformed. A contributory pension paid under the provisions of the Widows', Orphans' and Old Age Contributory Pensions Act is not treated as unearned income. If the hon. Baronet will give me particulars of the case he has in mind, I shall be happy to cause inquiries to be made.
