HC Deb 02 March 1939 vol 344 cc1442-3
87. Mr. Leslie

asked the Minister of Labour whether he is aware of the large increase in unemployment in the Tees-side area, particularly in the shipyards and iron works; and what proposals has he to deal with the situation?

Mr. E. Brown

I regret the present unsatisfactory position with regard to unemployment on Tees-side and I would refer the hon. Member to the statements which have been made with regard to the policy of the Government in the matter.

Mr. Leslie

Is the right hon. Gentleman aware that the situation has become so serious that a conference of local authorities was held recently and an application has been made to the right hon. Gentleman to receive a deputation?

Mr. Brown

My right hon. Friend the President of the Board of Trade has made a statement and he has received representations from the shipping industry on this matter.

Mr. Shinwell

Is it not true that the policy to which the right hon. Gentleman referred is a long-term policy? What is he doing now?
