§ 48. Mr. Cluseasked the Minister of Labour how many printing trade insured workers were registered as unemployed at the City of London Employment Exchange at the week-end, 25th February, 1939; and the figures for the same comparable date in 1938?
§ Mr. E. BrownAt 16th January, 1939, the latest date for which figures are available, 2,731 insured persons, aged 14–64, in the printing, publishing and bookbinding industry classification, were recorded at the City of London Employment Exchange as unemployed; the corresponding figure for 17th January, 1938, was 1,986. Separate figures are not available in respect of the printing industry alone.
§ Mr. CluseAs the printing trade workers have a separate exchange, are they not separately registered?
§ Mr. BrownThe hon. Member will know that it is for the convenience of industry, where it can be managed, where there is great concentration of one particular trade, that those concerned should register at a particular exchange, as is done in the case of the docks.
