§ The total number of candidates who attended all principal Civil Service examinations in 1936 and 1937, respectively, were 35,804 and 39,090. The corresponding figure for 1938 is not available.
§ The Welsh language is an optional subject in the syllabus for the open competitions for the clerical classes and for the executive group of situations in the Civil Service. The total number of candidates who attended the examinations for those classes in 1936, 1937 and 1938, and the number of candidates who took the Welsh language as a subject, were as follow:
