HC Deb 28 June 1939 vol 349 cc417-8
67. Mr. Paling

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies why the efforts being made in Cyprus to submit petitions to the Governor, giving an assurance of the people's loyally and declaring their wish for constitutional liberties in both the central and local administrations have been suppressed; did he approve of the appointment of a municipal councillor of Nicosia being revoked on the ground that he had taken part in the preparation and signing of the petitions; and whether he is aware that four councillors of Famagusta resigned as a protest against the Government's attitude in this matter?

Mr. M. MacDonald

I am not aware of any action answering to the description contained in the first part of the hon. Member's question. I have received no report from the Governor regarding the facts alleged in the second and third parts, but am making inquiries.
