asked the President of the Board of Trade the quantity of calcium carbide imported into this country in the last 12 month; the average cost per ton; whether it is still the policy of the Government to get calcium carbide produced in this country; and what steps they are taking in that direction?

Mr. Stanley

75,400 tons of calcium carbide were imported into this country in the 12 months ended 31st May last, and the average declared c.i.f. value was £9 5s. a ton. As regards the latter part of the question, I would refer the hon. Member to the answer given on 25th April to the hon. Member for Stoke (Mr. E. Smith).
