HC Deb 26 June 1939 vol 349 cc22-3
46. Mr. Bracken

asked the Prime Minister whether in view of the continued social distress and economic stagnation in many of the Crown Colonies, he will move to appoint a Select Committee of this House to consider the means by which a policy of intensive economic development can be centrally conceived, centrally Carried out and centrally financed.

The Prime Minister

I would refer my hon. Friend to the answer which I gave to the hon. and gallant Member for Nuneaton (Lieut.-Commander Fletcher) on 12th June last, to which I am not yet in a position to add.

Mr. Shinwell

Does the right hon. Gentleman not propose to do something to improve the standard of living in the Crown Colonies and thus assist our own export trade?

The Prime Minister

If the hon. Member will refer to the answer which I gave on a. previous occasion, to which I have now referred, he will see that the matter is under consideration.

Mr. Bracken

Will the right hon. Gentleman tell us when he will be in a position to give us an answer to the question put by the hon. and gallant Member for Nuneaton (Lieut.-Commander Fletcher) and myself?

The Prime Minister

I think my hon. Friend had better put that question to my right hon. Friend the Secretary of State for the Colonies.

Mr. Paling

Can the right hon. Gentleman tell us whether we are likely to have an answer before the Recess?

The Prime Minister

That question again should be addressed to my right hon. Friend the Secretary of State for the Colonies.
