HC Deb 21 June 1939 vol 348 cc2220-1
52. Mr. Day

asked the Minister of Transport what decision has been arrived at for the purpose of relieving the heavy traffic at the Elephant and Castle, in the borough of Southwark, and at other congested traffic points in the London area; and will he make a statement?

Captain Wallace

I am awaiting the proposals of the London County Council for relieving traffic congestion at the Elephant and Castle. Agreement has been reached with the County Council on schemes for dealing with the following congested traffic points: South and North Approaches to the New Waterloo Bridge, Notting Hill Gate, Kensington High Street in conjunction with the rebuilding of Messrs. Barkers premises, and certain bridges and roads forming approaches to the London Docks. These are additional to the London schemes to which I propose to refer in reply to a later question by the hon. Member for South-West Bethnal Green (Sir P. Harris). Agreement has also been reached with the Corporation of the City of London for the widening of sections of Queen Victoria Street, Houndsditch and Bishopsgate and the introduction of a comprehensive scheme of traffic light signals at the Mansion House crossing.

Mr. Day

Has an agreement been reached with the City Corporation in regard to the traffic at the Elephant and Castle?

Captain Wallace

I have given the hon. Member certain particulars about the Elephant and Castle. If he wants more specific information perhaps he will put a question down.

Mr. Day

Has anything been done in regard to the by-pass at Union Road?

Captain Wallace

Perhaps the hon. Member will also put that question on the Order Paper.
