58. Mr. Davidson

asked the Minister of Transport the total number of road-accident fatalities in Glasgow for the years ended March, 1938 and 1939, respectively, giving separate figures for the Maryhill Division?

Captain Wallace

The numbers of persons killed as a result of road accidents in the city of Glasgow during the years ended 31st March, 1938 and 1939, were 114 and 123 respectively. The corresponding figures for the Maryhill Police Division of Glasgow were 8 and 12.

Mr. Davidson

In view of the increase in the number of accidents, may I ask the Minister if the local authorities are giving the Ministry all the co-operation possible, and whether the Ministry have in view other steps to secure the safety of the Glasgow streets?

Captain Wallace

I think we ought to be careful about drawing deductions from two figures. As far as I am aware, the local authorities are doing everything they can to help in this common crusade against road accidents.

Is the Minister aware that since 1935 there has yearly been an increase in the number of road fatalities?
