HC Deb 21 June 1939 vol 348 cc2235-6
82. Mr. Graham White

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies whether he is now in a position to make a further statement on the censorship of the Press in Cyprus?

Sir T. Inskip

In the absence of my right hon. Friend I am not in a position to add to the reply which I gave on this subject on 14th June.

Mr. White

Is the right hon. Gentleman in a position to state whether quotations from the OFFICIAL REPORT dealing with the recent Debate on Colonial affairs in this House, are allowed to be reprinted in Cyprus?

Sir T. Inskip

My right hon. Friend stated a week ago that he is making inquiries into this matter. Perhaps the hon. Gentleman would put that question down to my right hon. Friend.

Mr. Riley

Is it a fact that the "Manchester Guardian" is not allowed there?

Sir T. Inskip

I am not aware of that.

Sir A. Sinclair

Can we have a list of the newspapers which are not allowed in Cyprus?

Sir T. Inskip

I am not aware that there are any newspapers on a list as being proscribed in Cyprus.

Mr. Sorensen

Will the right hon. Gentleman make inquiries?

Sir T. Inskip

I have said that my right hon. Friend is making full inquiries as to some of the allegations which have been contained in questions.
