HC Deb 21 June 1939 vol 348 cc2217-8
37. Mr. Maxwell

asked the Secretary of State for Air whether it is intended to continue the recruitment for the Civil Air Guard of young men under the age at which they are required to undergo compulsory military training?

Captain Balfour

No, Sir. It is not intended to continue recruitment for the Civil Air Guard of men under the age of 21, and instructions to this effect were issued to the flying clubs last month by the Civil Air Guard Commissioners.

Mr. Maxwell

Is it intended to continue the training of people in this category already enlisted in the Civil Air Guard under the age of 21.

Captain Balfour

The question whether training in the Civil Air Guard should be given to people under 21 already in the Civil Air Guard has been under consideration.

Mr. Maxwell

Will the Air Ministry consider carefully whether it is worth while spending more money on people who will soon be removed from the Civil Air Guard for a period of four years?

Captain Balfour

That is one of the reasons why we are reconsidering this matter as regards those who are at present in the Civil Air Guard.

Wing-Commander James

Are we to understand that the policy in regard to the Civil Air Guard is now under revision?

Captain Balfour

No, Sir.
