HC Deb 20 June 1939 vol 348 cc2002-3
42. Mr. Leonard

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland whether he is satisfied that the smallholdings in Scotland are equipped with up-to-date appliances suitable to their respective requirements?

The Under-Secretary of State for Scotland (Mr. Wedderburn)

New holdings constituted since 1912 by the Department of Agriculture for Scotland are equipped with suitable dwelling-houses and other permanent buildings readily adaptable by holders to the particular branch of development proposed to be followed. In the case of other holdings the Department may provide assistance by way of loan towards the cost of improving or rebuilding dwelling-houses or other buildings. The provision of movable or less permanent appliances for the working of a holding is a matter for the tenants. If the hon. Member has any particular type of case in view, perhaps he will be good enough to communicate with me.

Mr. Leonard

Is it not desirable that information should be gathered in order to ascertain whether the help which is being given is suitable?

Mr. Wedderburn

I think it is, but if the hon. Member desires any further information perhaps he will put down a further question.
