HC Deb 20 June 1939 vol 348 c2014
55. Mr. Bellenger

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer what has been the percentage depreciation in the exchange value of the Chinese dollar since the passing of the China (Currency Stabilisation) Act; and whether he is satisfied that the stabilisation fund is adequate to maintain the Chinese currency at its present level?

63. Mr. Pethick-Lawrence

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer whether he has any statement to make with regard to the position of the Chinese dollar?

Sir J. Simon

The percentage depreciation in the exchange value of the Chinese dollar since the passing of the China (Currency Stabilisation) Act is about 20 per cent. With regard to the position of the Chinese dollar, there is nothing which I can add at present to the statement issued in Hong Kong which was circulated in the Official Report on 13th June.

Mr. Bellenger

In view of the intentions of His Majesty's Government, as explained by the Chancellor when the Act was going through the House, is it the purpose of His Majesty's Government to defend the Chinese dollar from the attacks that are now being made by the Japanese Government?

Sir J. Simon

As the hon. Gentleman knows, the purpose of the Act, as explained in the Debate, was to give assistance, under the terms of the Act, to maintain the Chinese currency. We guaranteed a certain contribution made to the fund.
