HC Deb 20 June 1939 vol 348 c1998
32. Mr. Day

asked the Secretary of State for War to what extent the output of the Bren light machine-gun has been increased to meet the needs of the Army; and what reports he has received as to the manufacture of these weapons in Canada, Australia, and South Africa?

Mr. Hore-Belisha

The output of Bren guns is steadily increasing, but the hon. Member will not expect me: to give figures. Satisfactory reports have been received in regard to the progress of the new plant in Canada. Manufacture in Australia and the Union of South Africa is not being undertaken on behalf of His Majesty's Government in the United Kingdom.

Mr. Day

Can the right hon. Gentleman say whether the manufacture of this gun is taking place in India?

Mr. Hore-Belisha

No, Sir.

Mr. Lawson

What progress is being made?

Mr. Hore-Belisha

Progress with regard to material is proceeding in Canada approximately according to schedule, so I am informed.
