HC Deb 12 June 1939 vol 348 cc900-1
63. Mr. R. Gibson

asked the President of the Board of Trade how many fell-mongeries using sheepskins imported from the Colonies there are in operation in Scotland and England, respectively; what were the corresponding figures for 1929 and 1919, respectively; and what is the explanation of the trend shown by the figures?

Mr. Cross

My right hon. Friend regrets that he is not in possession of the desired information.

Mr. Gibson

Is the hon. Gentleman not aware that these skins imported from the Colonies are being sent to France to be worked there; that factories in this country, including factories in Greenock, are on the point of closing down as a result; and will he look into the matter to see whether something cannot be done to safeguard this industry?

Mr. Cross

I would ask the hon. and learned Member to communicate with me.
