§ 26. Rear-Admiral Beamishasked the Secretary of State for War whether he is aware that an unfair strain is being put upon the self-sacrifice and energy of the women who have joined the Auxiliary Territorial Service, due to lack of helpful advice, administrative, and other facilities, reasonable travelling, and other expenses; and will he bring this important adjunct to the armed forces in every respect more nearly into line with the Territorial Army?
§ Mr. Hore-BelishaThe self-sacrifice and energy of the Auxiliary Territorial Service is highly appreciated, but I am not aware of any lack of helpful advice and assistance. Dame Helen Gwynne-Vaughan has now been appointed Director of the Auxiliary Territorial Service with the rank of Chief Controller. The service is now administered largely by a staff of women, and, in certain respects, the conditions are under review.
§ Rear-Admiral BeamishIs the right hon. Gentleman aware that the travelling and drill allowances are far below those of the Territorial Army, and that at the moment the scales of pay on mobilisation have not even been published?
§ Mr. Hore-BelishaI am aware that there are at present many shortcomings but that has been inevitable in a new service, and I hope that this service will justify itself and be recognised in all respects.
§ Rear-Admiral BeamishCan the right hon. Gentleman give an assurance that the scales of pay will be published very shortly?
§ Mr. Hore-BelishaYes, if they have not been published; I thought they had been.
