HC Deb 31 January 1939 vol 343 cc16-7
25. Mr. R. Gibson (for Mr. Malcolm MacMillan)

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland the number of old age pensioners in Ross and Cromarty, including Lewis, and in Inverness-shire, including the islands, who are receiving public assistance?

Mr. Colville

The numbers of old age pensioners receiving public assistance in Ross and Cromarty (including Lewis), and in Inverness-shire (including the islands), at 15th November, 1938, were 334 and 369 respectively.

Mr. Davidson

How much of an increase is this on the previous two years?

Mr. Colville

I cannot say whether it is an increase or a decrease.

Mr. Gallacher

Is the Minister not aware that this is a very undesirable state of affairs, and will he not recommend an increase in pensions?
