asked the Secretary for Mines the number of mines employing 10 or more men in each and the number in aggregate that have been closed and not reopened in England and Wales during the five years ended to the last convenient date?

During the five years ended 31st December, 1938, 240 pits in England and Wales, each employing 10 or more persons and in the aggregate 36,917 persons, have been closed and not re-opened.

Can the Minister say whether any efforts have been made to re-open the closed pits?

I could not answer that offhand about 240 pits.
