HC Deb 31 January 1939 vol 343 c7
10. Mr. Day

asked the President of the Board of Trade whether he will state, according to the latest information he has available, the nominal value of British capital invested in the Argentine and Brazil, and the total annual revenue from these investments?

Mr. Stanley

No official estimates of British investments overseas are available and I am indebted to Sir Robert Kindersley for the following particulars. The nominal value of British capital invested in the Argentine and Brazil at the end of 1937 in the form of securities quoted in the United Kingdom is estimated at approximately £370,000,000 and £160,000,000, respectively. The estimated revenue from these investments in the same year amounted respectively to £10,000,000 and £4,000,000. These figures cover the main bulk of British assets in these countries but are exclusive of private and other investments not easily capable of estimation.

Mr. Day

Has the right hon. Gentleman any record which will show the amount and the proportion of those dividends that came to this country?

Mr. Stanley

Perhaps the hon. Gentleman will put that question down.
