HC Deb 27 February 1939 vol 344 cc869-70
1. Mr. Robert Gibson

asked the Under-Secretary of State for India on what principle "Mein Kampf" is permitted unrestricted circulation in India, while publications by the late Right Hon. J. Ramsay MacDonald are banned there; and whether he will make a statement on the matter?

The Under-Secretary of State for India (Lieut.-Colonel Muirhead)

I am not aware of any publication of the late Mr. Ramsay MacDonald having ever been banned in India. As regards "Mein Kampf" I have nothing to add to the answer I gave on this matter on 9th February.

Mr. Sorensen

Will the hon. and gallant Gentleman ask his predecessor for information concerning the banning of the books of the late Mr. J. Ramsay MacDonald?

Lieut.-Colonel Muirhead

The answer I have given is the best answer I could give from all the evidence and information in the possession of the Department.

Mr. Sorensen

Is not the hon. and gallant Gentleman aware that the late Mr. Ramsay MacDonald's books were banned at one time?

Lieut.-Colonel Muirhead

No, Sir. I have said that we are not aware in the Department of any ban ever having been imposed. It is true that there were once rumours of a ban being imposed, but they were without foundation.
